At the beginning of lockdown, many pictures of makeshift home offices filled our Twitter feeds (yep we’re talking about that viral snap of the girl perched on her sofa using the ironing board as a desk).

We’re now many months into our #WFH life and working from the kitchen island, the dining room table, or even the sofa is the new normal. So, we thought we’d share a few tips to help you maintain your posture whilst working from your sofa.

Get your set-up sorted...

Many posture issues occur when we hunch or slouch over a laptop, so the first thing to do is to make sure that your laptop is as close to eye level as possible. Many of us will automatically prop our laptop on our knees and start working, however, this is not a good angle for our backs and will encourage us to slouch or hunch forward.

To avoid the inevitable hunch, try propping your laptop on a thick cushion or a large coffee table book so that it sits closer to your eye level.

Keep on moving...

Our first reaction will always be to sit on a sofa, but an alternative option is to place your laptop on the sofa and sit cross-legged on the floor in front of it. This may not be comfortable for everyone and varying heights of different sofas may mean that this isn’t a suitable option, but it is worth experimenting with.

Use your sofa as your desk...

If you’re lucky enough to have two sofas to choose from as your work station for the day, opt for the sofa that has a firmer feel to it. Sinking into a deep cushion seat does give the perception of comfort, but after a while, you will begin to slouch forward, which is not only bad for your posture but can also cause back pain and a lack of focus.

Firmer is better...

If you’re lucky enough to have two sofas to choose from as your work station for the day, opt for the sofa that has a firmer feel to it. Sinking into a deep cushion seat does give the perception of comfort, but after a while, you will begin to slouch forward, which is not only bad for your posture but can also cause back pain and a lack of focus.

Cushions are your friends...

Propping a cushion behind your back can help you to sit up straight whilst you work from your sofa and help to prevent you from slouching. Not all cushions are created equal, so experiment with different cushions until you find the perfect one. You don’t want to slouch, but you also don’t want to feel as if you’re tipping forwards.

There’s no doubt about it, 2020 is the year of the home office, so ideally it’s worth investing in a proper desk and a chair but, if your sofa is your current go-to workspace, then we hope you found the above tips useful.
