Midnight blue is definitely the new black this season, and rich velvet fabrics are embracing this colour in the most regal way. Do you want to leave behind the dark side, and cross over to the darker side? Perhaps we can help…
Dark and moody
With conservative and authoritarian notes, hues of midnight blue are known to be prevalent in French culture. Particularly in Provence, this colour is revered and decorates the interiors of most homes in the form of dark blue sofa’s. It is dark and moody, and tends to bring a sense of comfort to any room – particularly in winter. Midnight-blue maven and interiors influencer, Kerry Lockwood, has a particular penchant for the colour. In an interview with ‘The French Bedroom Company’, she said her “top tips for working with dark, moody colours are to make sure you get the lighting right. Lots of small pools of lighting around the room are key to creating the perfect ambience.’
Flirting with velvet
Velvet remains a timeless fabric. Experts are predicting that ‘maximalism’ will be revived come 2019, and it seems that there’s no better fabric for our colour trend to flirt with. Winner of ‘Best Design Inspiration’ at this year’s Amara IBAs, The Design Sheppard, also emphasised on her blog that it is bright and bold colours that will be paired with velvet in 2019.
“Neutral sofas that go unnoticed and disappear into the background are no longer what home owners are looking for. Instead they want stand-out pieces that allow them to really inject a bit of personality into the room. These bright and bold velvet sofas allow them to do just that.”
The backdrop matters
Remember, the statement matters. A midnight blue couch in velvet is bold, it’s daring and, let’s be honest – it’s the centrepiece. Make sure you decorate the room around the sofa – do not decorate the sofa around the room. You need to make sure you’re letting the statement piece make its statement. Overpowering with patterns and fabrics will take attention away – and if there’s one thing we know as sofa experts, it’s that beautiful sofas need attention.
Keep it light, and keep it bright
An airy atmosphere is perfect for your midnight blue couch to thrive in. Here, it can be the centre of attention, the showstopper, your room’s best feature. Our suggestion? Keep it light, keep it bright – and preferably white. Don’t fear that your blue will turn bland – this shade of midnight has a tendency to bleed its colour into the room. A white backdrop will allow it to do this without any fear of clashing with other patterns or fabrics.
Have we tempted you to cross over to the dark(er) side? If not, we’re sure our range of velvet sofas definitely will…
