There is an interior design myth that dark walls are reserved for grand establishments with sweeping ceilings and ornate fireplaces. But darker colours can add elegance, luxury and character to the most ordinary box room. This trend has been on our radar for a little while as we’ve pondered the eternal question: is navy blue the new black? Well, we think it may be!
If you’re a fan of the monochromatic trend like we are, navy blue makes a real style statement here and looks edgy, fresh and modern. Dark walls absorb light, making your wall space far less defined, which creates an illusion of more space and adds a rich depth.
Adding a navy chair and accessories to layer the colour in one space is what creates a strong monochromatic look. Our blue sofas and chairs are now so popular, they even have their own page – check out our Lady May in Dusky velvet Atlantis for a truly luxurious take on this trend!
Our Lexington sofa, designed in collaboration with Red magazine, is also styled against a dark blue wall here to bring a pop of colour to a living room space.
Navy was originally used as an accent colour paired with brights, but today this shade also looks fabulous with metallics and different textures, from timber to industrial concrete. Take navy into the kitchen, like this image, and pair with wood for a classic and elegant refresh.
