We’ve all left the house of a friend or family member and thought “what a gorgeous living room they have” or “what a stylish kitchen”. How often, though, have you found yourself impressed with design of their staircase? Probably never. And most likely they have been equally unimpressed with yours. Why do we neglect our staircases when it comes to decorating our homes? They are a prominent feature of every house and yet most of us do little more than paint or carpet them in a neutral colour. Well no more. It’s time to create something truly special in your hallway, so take some inspiration from these charming staircase design ideas.
Tile It
Tiles can look stunning in any part of the home, but rarely are they considered for staircases unless they follow on from a surrounding tiled floor. The beauty of tiles is the sheer choice available – whether you go for a colourful mosaic, or a simple, understated style, there really is no limit to the options available.
All the Colours of the Rainbow
Can’t decide on a colour to paint your stairs? Then why not opt for them all, or at least a few of them. The example below recreates part of the colour spectrum to great effect, but there are all manner of combinations you can opt for.
A Single Bold Colour
Of course, if you have a favourite colour, then there is no reason not use it to paint your stairs. Bright colours work particularly well in the hallway, and that is because you don’t spend long periods of time there – unlike with your living room or bedroom – and so won’t find your head pounding because you are staring at your neon-yellow walls for hours on end!
Create a Work of Art
One great way to bring a boring staircase to life is to turn it into a piece of art. If you have a creative side, this is an unusual yet interesting way to advertise your talents. But you don’t have to be Picasso to create a stunning piece of art – using stencils, for example, can also produce lovely results.
Wallpaper
Yes, wallpaper doesn’t just have to go on walls. In fact it can look good on a number of surfaces, including stairs. Depending on your tastes, you can pretty much go for anything, whether it is traditional floral wallpaper or something a bit more contemporary, such as a geometric design.
Vinyl Tape
A quick and effective way to liven up your stairs is to use vinyl tape. There are many ways you can use it, including covering the entire staircase (as below), placing it around the edges or creating a focal point down the centre of the steps.
Back to Basics
Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. Despite having been completely stripped back and lacking any adornments, the rustic-style stairs below really standout in an otherwise neutral decorated space.
