The cold dark nights are closing in, and whether this winter turns out to be a snowy one or a wet one, we all need somewhere snug and warm to come home to, a place that lets us cocoon ourselves from the elements. It’s not just about turning up the heating, though; it’s also about creating the right atmosphere, so here are a few tips on giving your home a cosy feel this winter.
Lower the Lighting
Bright lighting opens up a room, giving it a stark, cold feel – not exactly a welcoming environment during the bitter winter months! Instead, at this time of year you should be looking to turn down the lights in your home in order to create more of an intimate space, somewhere that envelops you. Choose lamps that are designed to give off a warm honey-coloured glow, rather than light up part of a room – lanterns in particular are ideal for this purpose. You can also use candles around a room to achieve a similar effect.
Focus on the Fireplace
Nothing makes a room quite so inviting as the ambient glow of a roaring fire. As the wind howls outside, there’s something rather comforting in gathering round a toasty fireplace with your loved ones. These days, there are a variety of options available, from traditional to contemporary fireplaces to wood burning stoves. But even if you’re not able to have a real fireplace in your home, there are alternatives – gas and electric for example – and, when all else fails, candles collected together can work just as well.
Add Warm Colours
Decorate and accessorise your home with colours that exude a sense of warmth. Terracotta, red, orange, and yellow tones are ideal choices as they all bring to mind visions of the fireside. If you’re up for redecorating, paint an accent wall one of these shades. Otherwise, you can easily add colour to a room with throws, cushions and other soft furnishings. And throws are great to snuggle under on a cold night!
Lay a Rug
Bare floors – even if they have underfloor heating – just aren’t conducive to that cosy feel, so it’s a good idea to cover them with some area rugs. Sheepskin and wool rugs are perfect, and if you have a fireplace you can lay them by, so much the better! Even if you already have carpet on your floors, a plush rug you can curl your toes into is a must have winter item.
Evoke the Senses
When it comes to evoking the senses, smell is one of the most powerful, often causing long forgotten memories to come flooding back. Fill your home with the comforting and familiar aromas of winter using scented candles, oils, or incense sticks – cinnamon, pine, apple, orange, and frankincense, to name but a few – and you’ll be reminiscing of winters gone by.
