When the bells ring in the New Year, we invariably promise to become better versions of ourselves – to lose weight, change our appearance in some way, learn a foreign language… Of course, self-improvement is commendable, but the coming year also offers the ideal opportunity to improve your home’s interior. Yes, it’s time to stop putting off that redecorating job you’ve been planing for longer than you can remember and give your home the makeover it deserves. To help you along the way, we’ve put together a few home decorating ideas to motivate and inspire you.
1. Bold Colour Combinations
Bright greens and oranges, bubble gum pink with blues, yellows paired with royal purple – strong colours will be all the rage in 2015, and if you really want to create a stand-out look in your home this year, consider combining some of those bolder shades rather than decorating a room in just one.
2. Dark Walls
If bright, bold colours aren’t for you, then why not opt for something completely different. Dark walls can be hard to pull off, but if you get it right you can create an interesting space that is moody and reflective. For a successful look, make sure to balance the dark with splashes of colour and plenty of natural light.
3. Dip-Dye Furniture
There are plenty of ways to spruce up those tired old pieces of furniture knocking about your home, and putting on a coat of paint is a particularly effective way to breathe new life into a neglected item. Rather than painting your furniture from top-to-toe, though, consider giving it a ‘dipped’ appearance by only painting a certain part.
4. A Statement Sofa
There is a style of sofa to suit every taste. Some prefer a sophisticated classic, whilst others hanker for a minimalist and modern design. If you’re after something a bit more dramatic, a statement sofa – boasting bold colours or patterns – may well be the perfect choice. And such sofas make a great addition to an otherwise uninspired living space.
5. Mirrors – Lots of Little Ones
Mirrors make for a great focal point in any room, and mounting an attractive and stylish mirror onto a wall in your living area can really complete the look of the space. But instead of hanging one large mirror, consider a collection of little ones. They add a quirky appeal to a home and will certainly get noticed, particularly if they are of the mix-and-match variety.
6. Painterly Rugs
A reproduction Rothko would undoubtedly look nice on the wall, but what about on the floor? Painterly rugs make a real change from the usual pieces you see gracing living room and bedroom floors, and are a quick and easy way to add colour and vibrancy to a space. And, as you can see from the example below, they can look great when paired with a statement sofa.
Whether it’s tiles, bottles or wall inserts, glass – both coloured and clear – is expected to make a big comeback in 2015. The options for glass are many and varied, and even if you don’t fancy undertaking a major decorating project there are easier alternatives, such as decorating a room with an assortment of simple glass bottles.
