Top 5 Online Interior Design Tools

Redesigning a room can be a tricky business. If you’re not comfortable with making floor plans, or don’t want to move that large sideboard around until you’re sure where you want it to go, you might end up putting off that revamp indefinitely. For those at odds with interior design, here are five online interior design tools that aim to make the job a lot easier and quicker – with no unnecessary moving around of heavy objects, or poorly thought out colour schemes for that matter!

1. Roomstyler

Roomstyler is a simple room simulator that lets users create the home of their dreams or completely redesign their home. With more than 120,000 real world items from real brands, the site is full of furniture and accessories of both current and classic design. Roomstyler has a wide choice of architectural flourishes and can even dabble in exterior landscaping. You can also create moodboards for inspiration, and have your creations displayed to other users for commentary or competition. The site has daily designs from fellow users, providing inspiration and a sense of fun.

2. Design A Room

Floor & ceiling design and manufacturer company Armstrong offers a 3D program that allows you to test and view combinations of flooring, cabinets, ceilings, walls, and countertops. Users choose a room (bathroom, kitchen, living room or bedroom) and then pick a favoured style (such as contemporary, traditional, or global fusion) and experiment with colours, textures, and finishes. Design A Room is perfect if you need to completely redesign a space and want to see the result before you put paint to plaster. Armstrong’s library of flooring and ceiling selections tells you what you need to know about the products and materials. For example, if you choose wooden flooring for your bathroom, you will get a comment explaining that it’s not recommended for use in that environment.

3. Homestyler

Homestyler was created by the designers of AutoCAD and 3ds Studio Max – best known for their 3D building information modelling and 3D rendering capabilities. This online program will help you plan out your house, flat or office, giving you the tools to design, furnish and decorate every part of a space, inside and out! For example, to make floor plans, you would use the simple drag and drop commands to create, alter, and angle walls within your design. Homestyler is easy to use and requires no prior knowledge of home design. After you’ve finished, you can print out what you’ve used in the design to create the perfect shopping list. You can even post what you’ve created to social media sites.

4. Smartdraw

Smartdraw is a suite of programs designed to create visual graphics and presentations. You can create project charts, timelines, marketing charts, and flow charts. Under the flow chart application, users can create floor plans and individual room plans. Smartdraw allows you to design and customise drawings. Use the program to plan out office spaces, flats, individual rooms, and even building elevations. There’s a huge choice of furniture, building materials, cars, and preloaded plans. It’s easy for beginners to use, but if you’re particularly tech savvy, you can add custom content and specifications.

5. Sweet Home 3D

Sweet Home 3D is the perfect tool if you want to redecorate or rearrange existing furniture in a room. The program has 75 furniture models that can be placed in any room, and are carefully organised according to their usual room function. Users can create a custom plan that matches their house, perfectly replicating all room measurements and furniture details. Users can create custom rooms, with specific room dimensions, unique wall thickness and texture, and any other detail you think is important. And, you can enjoy a 3D preview of your creation at any time.
