Summer is coming and, while the best place to enjoy the sunny weather is outside, it is important to have a pleasant house to come home to. The living room should be a place for you to relax and feel comfortable in, so it is important to make it feel accommodating when the heat gets too much. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you brighten up your living room this summer:
1. Start with a new coat of paint
If you really want to revamp your living room for summer, why not start from scratch? Repainting can do wonders for a room and change the feel of it completely. Go for a light, summery, tone, or a cool blue or green – great colours to relax amongst when it gets too hot outside.
2. Replace darker colours
Whilst you are not expected to replace all your furniture, smaller objects like picture frames, vases and lampshades can easily be swapped out for something gentler on the eye. Ideally, you should look for something that complements your overall colour scheme, so whether you go for muted or bright colours will depend on the tone you are after.
3. Change the curtains
During the summer months you really want to take advantage of natural light. Any heavy, dark curtains should be taken down in favour of something less imposing, such as voile curtains, which are thin and wispy and will let much more of the sunshine stream into your room. If you do prefer thick curtains, try to use a lighter colour for a more open, less restrictive feel.
4. Decorate the windowsill
The window may provide a good view, but a few decorations and ornaments will really add to its overall appeal. In the summer, one great option is glass sculptures, preferably coloured, as they will catch the light beautifully. Other natural ornaments, such as sandcasts, also add to the summery feel and bring a little nature into your home.
5. Buy some new cushions and throws
It may seem like a minor addition to your furniture, but the right choice of cushion or throw can really bring a living room to life. If your furniture is a darker shade you may want to get a nice, bright throw to add some colour. When it comes to cushions, find a colour and pattern that complements the colour scheme of both the furniture and the surrounding room.
6. Add some plants or flowers
Fresh flowers are a fantastically simply way to instantly bring colour to a room, although the type you choose will depend largely on personal taste. Whether keeping it simple with daffodils or opting for a more elaborate floral arrangement, flowers can really inject a summery feel into your living room.
7. Floral patterns
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Nothing says spring/summer quite like floral prints. Whether you go for a floral-patterned cushion, throw or all out with a floral-upholstered piece of furniture, your living room will burst with the colours of summer every time you walk into it.
8. Appeal to the senses
The right scent can truly enhance a room and make it a much more relaxing place to be. Again, this comes down to personal taste but there are many options when it comes to aromatherapy. Scented candles bring a subtle, pleasant smell to a room and also add to the visual décor, although you may prefer placing potpourri around the room instead. If that doesn’t appeal you could always try a reed diffuser, or burning oil or incense.
